Honey Bee Cross Stitch Cushion Tutorial

Happy 4th July! Today I am sharing with you my Honey bee cross stitch cushion tutorial. To get the free honey bee cross stitch pattern, just click the purple link or photo. I made this cushion for my new garden arbour and love how pretty it turned out!

When it is not on my garden arbour it is sitting pretty in my Summer house!

How-to step by step

  • Marking out cross stitch pattern

    Step 1

    Start by marking out your design on the embroidery board.

    Step 2

    Then using the embroidery board and a water erasable pen, mark the dots on to the front of your cotton canvas.

  • Apply interfacing to back

    Step 3

    Fuse a piece of iron on medium weight interfacing to the back of the fabric, where your design is.

  • Cross stitching

    Step 4

    With an embroidery needle threaded with stranded cotton, Start to cross stitch your design

  • Continue cross stitching

    Step 5

    Continue cross stitching the design

    Step 6

    Once you have finished cross stitching the design spritz lightly with water to remove erasable ink and leave to dry.

  • Pin broderie trim

    Step 7

    Pin a length of (broderie anglaise) trim down one side of the cushion, so that right sides face each other and raw edges align.

    Stitch 1cm from the edge, Starting and finishing 1cm away from the top and bottom.

    Step 9

    Fold the rest of the trim over the stitched trim. This will form a 45º fold. Press this fold in place. Stitch 1cm from the edge, Starting and finishing 1cm away from the top and bottom. Continue this process till all four sides of your cushion front have stitched trim around them.

    Step 10

    No press the trim in the corners into the cushion front so that your stitch line is visible. This will prevent catching the trim when you sew the back on.

    Step 11

    On one of the back pieces, zig zag stitch one of the shorter edges and then turn under a 4cm hem. Press flat. Place two lengths of cotton lace under the fold 9cm from each side. Pin to secure and back stitch in place.

    Step 12

    On the remaining back piece, zig zag stitch one of the shorter edges and then turn under a 1cm hem. Press flat and stitch in place. Place two lengths of cotton lace on the right side of the fabric 9cm from each side, 3cm in from hemmed edge. Pin to secure and back stitch in place.

    Step 13

    Now place the back pieces on top of the front piece ,with right sides together and raw edges even. Ensuring that the back pieces overlap with the first back piece you stitched under the second back piece. Pin to secure.

    Step 14

    Stitch a 1cm seam seam around the edges, pivoting the fabric at the corners. Zig zag stitch the raw edges separately.

    Step 15

    Clip the corners of the seam allowance.

    Step 16

    Turn right side out. Use a blunt-ended tol, such as the rounded end of a chopstick, to carefully push out the corners. Press the cover, insert the cushion pad, and tie up the back.
