Boys Wallet Sewing Tutorial

Last week I showed you the wash bag I made for my eldest nephew this past Christmas, to match his wash bag I also made a wallet using oilcloth for the outer with a boat print fabric for the inside pockets. He loved his wallet the best and took it everywhere with him and my sister was so chuffed as she had been looking for one to get him for Christmas but couldn't find anything she liked. So all in all this was definitely one of my most well received handmade gifts which my brother in law couldn't over that I made!

How-to step by step

  • Oilcloth Kids wallet - what you will need 2-01

    Step 1

    Start by cutting out the pieces of fabric as the illustration above. Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the corresponding pieces, following the manufacturer's instructions.

    Step 2

    Cut out the remaining outer pieces as above.

    Step 3

    Take the 7cm wide fused rectangle piece and place it wrong side against the right hand side of the zip. So that the raw edge aligns with the zip tape. Using a zipper foot attach zip. Then lightly press it to the right side and top stitch it down as photograph above.

    Step 4

    Fold the 5cm deep bias cut piece in half and press. Fold in the raw edges to meet your fold line and press to create bias binding strip.

    Step 5

    Place the binding over the left hand raw edge of the zip and stitch in place as photograph above.

    Step 6

    Place one half of the hook and loop strip, 1cm in from outer edge of pocket. Pin to secure and stitch in place down both sides.

    Step 7

    Place the zipped pocket on top of the inside oilcloth panel, matching up the raw edges. Pin or bind clip in place, Top stitch down binding edge and baste stitch remaining edges using a 5mm seam allowance.

    Step 8

    Fold the 18cm wide panel in half, wrong sides together, press. Edge stitch down fold.

    Step 9

    Pin the folded pocket panel to the left hand side of the inside oilcloth panel. Using a 5mm seam allowance, baste stitch in place.

    Step 10

    Place the 10cm wide centre pocket panels right sides together matching up the raw edges. Using a 1cm seam allowance stitch together along outer width edges.

    Step 11

    Turn the pocket right side out and using a 3mm seam allowance top stitch along width edges.

    Step 12

    Pin and stitch the centre pocket in place

    Step 13

    Pin the remaining hook and loop strip to the outside oilcloth panel, 6cm in from end.

    Step 14

    Edge stitch the hook and loop piece in place.

    Step 15

    Pin the outer oilcloth panel, wrong sides together with inside pocket panel, so that the hook and loop strips are at opposite ends.

    Step 16

    Using a 5mm seam allowance, baste stitch the outer to the inner.

    Step 17

    Fold the wallet to check your hook and loop strips lines up and the wallet sits correctly.

    Step 18

    Pin and stitch binding wrong sides together.

    Step 19

    Fold the binding to the inside and stitch in place.

    Voila! Now your wallet is ready to give or use.
