Tip

Most pears ripen from the inside out, so ripe ones will have a bit of give as you hold them firmly in your hand.

In Europe, the Bartlett pear is known as the Williams pear. It got its American name when a Bostonian named Enoch Bartlett bought a pear orchard and, not knowing the pears already had a name, began distributing them as Bartlett pears.

Store at room temperature until ripe, then transfer them to a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator.
